Welcome to my happy little corner of the Internet also known as the Maya Speight Command center. I wanted a place where I could put all of my social media content in one convenient location, so I shifted some things around and created the site where you’ve now found yourself.

Let me show you around…

Above the Maya Speight Header (pictured below), you’ll find the menu.

Home takes you, of course, home, meaning the main page.

About Me is a little more interesting. Click on it and you’ll find out more about me and this corner of the internet. Hover over it and you’ll see a dropdown menu which will take you to my BookTube Channel and Goodreads Profile.

Contact should be self-explanatory, but in case it isn’t, click Contact for how to get in contact with me should you want to say hi, are interested in partnering on a project, etc.

To the right of the blog post feed in the right sidebar (see picture), you’ll find all my social media.

right sidebar

At the very top is me and a short blurb of who I am. If you’re here, you probably already know who I am, but if not, Hi! I’m Maya.

Next (2nd from the top) is facebook. Honestly, I’m not on there that much, but I do have followers who use only facebook so I like to keep that avenue open for them.

Third from the top is the twitter feed which consists entirely of the fun stuff I found on the internet that I’ve retweeted.

Lastly is instagram. You’ll see me most there, generally once a day, sometimes a few times a week. That feed consists of pictures of books, food and my face (not necessarily in that order.)

If you’d rather cut out the middle man and just follow me on the social media site itself, my links are below. (just click the icon and you’ll be redirected to my page on the site.)

Thanks for visiting!

My Year in Books 2015

My Year in Books 2015

I’m so excited for 2016 and all the books I’ll read, but before then I want to recap the books I read in 2015 with a My Year in Books. I read 42 books and over 11,000 pages in all. Of course I won’t go through every book I read and will just be highlighting my favorites. Now, let’s look back at 2015 through all the amazing books I read.

Sea of Shadows by Kelley Armstrong | Book Review

Sea of Shadows by Kelley Armstrong | Book Review

Sea of Shadows (Age of Legends, #1)Sea of Shadows by Kelley Armstrong
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Summary: In the Forest of the Dead, where the empire’s worst criminals are exiled, twin sisters Moria and Ashyn are charged with a dangerous task. For they are the Keeper and the Seeker, and each year they must quiet the enraged souls of the damned. Only this year, the souls will be be quieted. Ambushed and separated by an ancient evil, the sisters must journey to find each other, sending them far from the only home they’ve ever known. Accompanied by a stubborn imperial guard and a dashing condemned thief, the girls cross a once empty wasteland, now filled with reawakened monsters of legend, as they travel to warn the emperor. But a terrible secret awaits them at court–one that will alter the balance of their world forever.

My Thoughts: That was surprisingly amazing. I checked out this book from the library and I am surprised by how much I liked it. I’ve seen a lot of people not like it, but I actually enjoyed it. I loved how the dual perspectives allowed me to see how both girls viewed their world and each other. I liked how each sister thought the other was the perfect one and it was interesting to see how that affected how they saw their own skills. I enjoyed the epic fantasy element. It reminded me of A Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson in that both books are meant for the long haul (you’ve got to stay with the book for more than just a few pages to really get into it.) Books like that can seem a little slow-paced to some and understandably so, but I actually found myself enjoying it. I used to hate slow-paced books and wanted a book to grip me from page one or I’d put it down, but I’m liking giving books a chance. As long as the book has a satisfying pay off by the end, I’m okay and Oh My Goodness!, I was very satisfied by the end because it sets you up for the next book and now I really want to read the rest of the series. Back to the epic fantasy element, this book had me wondering if these sisters could ever catch a break because there was something always happening. As soon as they made it out of one creature’s mouth, they were snatched up by another one. That could feel a little annoying sometimes, but somehow it works. I liked that it was a fairly quickly read obviously for a younger audience, but that didn’t take away from its appeal. If you like epic fantasies with action and romance then this is definitely the book for you.

M<3: Last Look Back by Lara Sean (Book Recommendation)

M<3: Last Look Back by Lara Sean (Book Recommendation)

book cover mockups1

Before we begin, you can read the complete summary of Last Look Back on goodreads.

This recommendation is a little different from my others. Unlike my other recommendations where I tell you my thoughts on a particular book, I’m going to share what people are saying about my book, Last Look Back by Lara Sean. I could rave about my book all day, but I think it has more clout when you hear it form someone else, so here you go:

“I love to read all types of books and every once in a while look for a good mystery/thriller story. When I received my copy of Last Look Back, it did not take me long to get involved in Octavia Steele’s life journey. Mid-way through the book, I found myself unable to put it down and realized it was 2:00 a.m. in the morning! I honestly had to force myself to read one chapter a night until the last 3-4 chapters. I finally finished the book at 3:00 a.m. that morning. Seriously! I know that I am not the only one who truly enjoyed this book and is anxiously waiting for the next one.” -Phyllis P.

“Last Look Back is a novel that kept me captivated from start to finish. I found myself immersed in a new type of mystery with twists that you’ll never see coming. This is a novel written for those who love the world of espionage, romance, and suspense all merged tastefully into one.”               – Mi’chelle W.

“Last Look Back is an exciting story that follows the main character, Octavia “Vie” Steele, and her journey to reclaim her life. Vie’s quirky attitude, strong mentality, and loyalty to those around her makes her a lovable character. The story is not predictable. It has different elements that draws readers in. I had a great time reading it. It kept me on the edge the entire time. I was engulfed in figuring out how Vie would turn out in the end.” -Dominique J.

The reviews above have been used with permission and is their honest opinion of my book.Little to no edits have been made to their original statement.

Last Look Back is available for purchase. The paperback can be found here and the ebook can be found here.

2 months done: Writing/Life Update

2 months done: Writing/Life Update

It’s crazy to think that two months of this year has already flown by so quickly. Well, I guess not really that crazy when that’s how the months work, but you get what I mean. Time goes by so fast and if you’re not paying attention you might miss something. In case you missed it, here are some of the amazing things that’s happened to me in the last two months.

  • I became a goodreads author and my book can be found on the website here.
  • I’ve been reading more and so far, I’ve read 3 books this year which is significantly more books than I read by this time last year. My goal is to read 23 books by my 23rd birthday in August, but I’d be happy with at least 20 books by the end of the year.
  • I’ve been working out 3 times a week for the last month or so and I’m actually sticking to it.  I haven’t lost much weight yet, but I can see a difference in the way I can walk up and down the stairs without needing to catch my breath. I’ve also seen a change in my strength and stamina and for me, that’s what really matters.
  • Speaking of things I’ve been keeping up with, let’s talk about this blog. I’ve actually been posting semi-frequently, at least once a week and sometimes more. I’m glad I got to a point where I stopped stressing about blogging. If there’s something I want to talk about, I’ll talk about it and if there’s not, well, I won’t have a post that week. Now, that I’m fine with it, I’m freer to post whenever I like which means lots of awesome posts for you guys.
  • Next, I’m thinking of drastically changing my look. I have an idea of what I’m going to do, but I won’t share until after I do it. You can try to guess if you like and I’m sure my version of drastic way be another person’s tame, but you can still have fun guessing.
  • At the end of March, I want to enter the Self published Book Awards hosted by Writer’s Digest. I’m speaking this into existence right now. I’m going to enter and I will win!
  • And finally, it’s time for my book update. I’ve written over 38,000 words of the second book so far which means I’m about half way done. My goal is to have the second draft done by the end of this month, but realistically it won’t get done until the end of April. I still want to shoot for the end of March, though to keep it challenging and give me something to work towards. I’ve said this at least a thousand times before, so I guess this will be the thousand and first time. I love writing. I love the process of creating a book and planning out what will happen. As I’m working on the 2nd book, the 3rd and 4th book are coming together in my mind and I’m backflip-in-the-air excited to write all of the amazingness that’s floating in my mind.

That’s all I have to share. Let me know if you want to see more of these update posts. Also, be sure to let me know the posts you all would like to see. Oh and if you haven’t been told yet today, you are amazing and I hope you’re having a wonderful day.

“Storytime with My” Page 3 w/ finished response

“Storytime with My” Page 3 w/ finished response

This Storytime with My was formatted a little differently and I hope you all enjoyed the change. I’m going to format these posts differently as well.

First, the live stream…

And now an outline of what I talked about…

First,  we had a little chat and I updated you all on what’s been going on. Mainly, I’m working on a website, I’m on tumblr, larasean.tumblr.com, and I want to start the #iloveme project. The post should be up by now so check it out for more details.

Did I forget anything?

Oh yeah, I AM OFFICIALLY A GOODREADS AUTHOR!!! Lara Sean and Last Look Back are on goodreads. Check them out here.

Also, I’ve realized that I like talking and having a little chat with you all so it will be very unlikely that the stream will be much shorter than 30 minutes. I will do my hardest to make sure it doesn’t get much longer.

Next, the prompt:

And now for my response:

His eyes. That was the first thing that I noticed about him. They were dark brown and they twinkled. They actually twinkled. Especially when he smiled. When he smiled and I looked into his eyes, I fell all over again.

When he got sick, I knew things would be different. Those twinkling brown eyes were the first to fade. They became listless and gray and I knew the rest of him would change soon after. I was told by the Guild that it was silly of me to be sad. Keran was an Incan and would return to me soon enough.

Once every one hundred years, he would die and be given a new life. Depending on the life and where he was placed in the world, he may be able to return to me or maybe he wouldn’t. He would have a different body, but his eyes would never change. He would always be my love. I would have to wait and pray that he would come back, but I knew if he hadn’t, I’d have to move on.

Before Keran finally took his last breath, he made me a promise. “A year,” he said. Wait for him for a year and if he couldn’t come back to me by then, then I could go on with my life. That was foolish. I had no life without him. I was sure that I would wait for him forever. He didn’t have to ask. I held his hand tightly and then he was gone.

The Guild was prompt in the removal of his body. They had to keep his body safe in case another Incan was assigned to it. I was left alone. I couldn’t muster anymore tears to cry. I just waited …and waited.

It was hard. I cried a lot in the beginning. Without him, it was like living without an arm or my leg or my heart. For a while, I hated him and his stupid eyes. If it weren’t for those eyes that drew me in and wouldn’t let me go, then I wouldn’t be having this problem. I wouldn’t be hurting so much. Why did I have to love him so much?

365 days inched slowly past and Keran was nowhere to be found. By this time, I had accepted the fact that I was desperately in love with him and would wait for him forever. As night fell on the 365th day, I prepared myself for a lifetime of waiting.

Then, on the morning of the 366th day, there was a knock at the door. I opened the door absentmindedly. “Hello,” I asked the stranger. He was tall. His head almost hit the top of the door frame. I had no idea who he was until I looked into his eyes. He smiled down at me and his eyes twinkled. I burst into tears and hugged him. It was Keran. It was my love.

“Sorry, I’m late,” he whispered, which was nonsense. I shook my head, my cheeks stained with tears, and hugged him as tightly as I could. I looked up at him, into the eyes that I fell in love with, and said, “You could’ve taken another 30 years and I would still be here. I am yours and you are mine. Forever.”

As I said in the stream, I worked on the prompt earlier in the day and edited it during the live stream. I liked that so much better and you can see my excitement during the show. Working on it earlier gave me time to work out what I wanted to say and I was able to read more enthusiastically because I already knew much of what was on the page. If you would like to listen to me read it, fast forward to the 19 minute mark.

My’s epically awesome Book List

My’s epically awesome Book List

You may have noticed that there is going to be a new page on No Rules very soon. Woohoo! *celebration break* I have been wracking my brain for a while trying to think of a way to share what books I’m reading this year with you all. I considered linking my goodreads page, but that seemed a little complicated. Recently, I got the idea that I should just share the books I’m reading here by creating a new page that I could edit when necessary. That way, you can just click the new page and find out the books I’m reading this year, books I’ve read and books that I’m interested in reading.
Click My’s epically awesome Book List for updates and let me know of any of the books that I might enjoy. Feel free to recommend me some books in the comment section below. I look forward to reading your recommendations.
