Book Release Countdown: 9 Days Left

Book Release Countdown: 9 Days Left

gettingreal

It’s getting real!!! Today, my friend instagrammed and texted me telling me that she received her copy of my book. I will take a moment to say how proud I am of the United States Postal Services. That was quick. It took only two days to get to its destination. I will also take this moment to say OMG!!! I am so excited!! Someone in the world has my book. OMG! OMG! OMG! OK, My, breathe.

I also received the license that allows me to collect sales tax on my book. Taxes, Ughh I know, but it makes me feel so official. Like this isn’t just a dream coming true, this is a real business.

It’s Nano2014 and I have at this exact second, 8,939 words. I’m writing a lot differently than I have in the past. The story I am writing is in third person and has a lot more description which is something that I have been trying to get better at. I’m having a blast writing and I think I’ll actually meet the 50,000 word goal (here’s hoping I didn’t just jinx myself.)

I think I’ve got the release  party all planned. I just need to do a little fine-tuning and I need to come up with a big surprise for a finale. Fingers crossed everything comes together.

Another day finished and another day closer to the best book you may ever read this year.

Book Release Countdown: 12 Days Left

new dayAnother beautiful day has passed. Another day of updates:

I reached my goal for day one of Nanowrimo and I’m excited about this new story I’m working on.

It was a wonderful day at church. The message came from Daniel 2:16-23 in case you wanted to know.

Hmmm, what else?

I think I’ll be mailing the pre-ordered copies out tomorrow. That way they’ll be sure to get in by the 14th.

And Yes, it’s starting to set in that my book will be officially out in two weeks. I’m skimming over the book one more time to see if I can catch any dire mistakes and I’m glad to say that I haven’t seen a lot. Maybe one or two. Even more than that, I’m getting invested into the story. I’m reading through it and I seriously almost forgot I wrote it. I’m sitting there and I’m like, Wow, this book is really good. Did I really write it? Needless to say, I’m very proud of myself and what I’ve accomplished. I know this is only a sliver of what I can do and the best is yet to come. I’m excited.

P.S. Don’t forget: You won’t be able to join me for the best virtual book release party if you don’t where to go, so here’s the link to Google Hangouts On Air site: https://plus.google.com/events/ceeoejnagr8o3pf36i8dicqtcc4

Also, as you know, the book release party is doubling as the spy-themed birthday party for the main character of Last Look Back, Octavia Steele. During the party, there will be a birthday surprise. This surprise will incorporate all of you, so if you would be so kind and in the comment section below, write some birthday well wishes for the great Octavia Steele, I’d greatly appreciate it. If the surprise goes well you’ll be seeing your comment very soon.

Embrace the Lazy Days

Embrace the Lazy Days

Lazy-Day-Saying

Now when I say Embrace Lazy Days, I mean to do so in moderation. You can’t have lazy days every day and expect to get anything done.  For me, I need to have at least one lazy day a week or even one every couple of days. Sometimes I need more than one day. You may have noticed the lack of Promo Storm posts. There are couple of reasons why I stopped. You all are probably so tired of my excuses, but I still feel the need to explain.

I realized that a lot of the topics I was going to discuss were hard to explain without you having the book. Also publishing, specifically self-publishing, takes a lot of your energy and brain power, more than I expected. Even my power reserves are tapped out. You guys, I am tired! In hindsight, I should have known better. Publishing takes your full attention. I should have made sure every thing was taken care of first before trying to have a Promo Storm every day as well. There has just been so much going on and I really needed a break. Though it’s been tiring, I’ve learned A LOT about the publishing process and now I am definitely prepared for my next book. I also know a better way to format a promo storm if I decide to do it again. Even though I’ve made a lot of mistakes and there have been more than a few gaffes, it’s all taught me what I need to do for the future.

And now we’re back to the title. Embracing the lazy days. There have been times in this process when I’ve gotten overwhelmed and really tired, so I’ve had to take a step back and just embrace the lazy days. Most times you need to push through the laziness or tiredness to get the words on the paper, but other times you really need to rest. If you’re not careful, the tiredness will be apparent in your work and you’ve forced yourself to write something that’s not so good. So, if you’re feeling a little lazy, it’s okay. Take a day off. Just don’t break forever. There’s work to be done.

P.S. I am officially done with my lazy days, but there will probably not be any more posts until we get closer to the release date and party on November 14th. I’m in the midst of planning now and will be sending you updates as we get closer to the date. I hope you all are still excited and ready for this book to come out. I can’t wait! 16 more days!!! 🙂

A Clueless Writer’s Guide to Self-Publishing

A Clueless Writer’s Guide to Self-Publishing

self-publish

I’ve learned a lot about self-publishing and it’s only right that I share what I’ve learned with you all. Here is a Clueless writer’s step-by-step guide.

  1. Finish a book- Obviously you need a book to publish if you’re going to self-publish.
  2. Pick your team:
    1. Find a cover designer for your cover, my sister Elayna at Inkeddesigns.com created my cover.
    2. Find an editor- I had a couple of friends look over my story and my mother and sister helped with editing. You need to have at least one person look over it because there may be somethings that you missed. I have been writing for 10 years and I have a degree in English. I also have looked over my book 20+ times and there will still some mistakes that I overlooked, so be sure you have someone to read over it.
  3. Formatting- Don’t do any crazy formatting. Keep it simple because that will ensure that the final product is clean and not a jumbled mess when it is published.
  4. Choose a self-publishing platform- I chose lulu. com. There are plenty of others to choose from, but I chose lulu because you have the option to make a paperback and e-book in the same place.
  5. Set your price-  Be sure to not set the price too high that no one can afford it or too cheap that you undermine your product.
  6. Promotion- Pick a release date, so you have a enough time to promote and promote the way that is best for you.
  7. Release: It’s time to party because it’s time to release. Release the book and then start all over again.

Sounds simple, doesn’t it. That’s because it is in the end. That should be the number 1 rule, if self-publishing is something that you want to do then don’t make it more complicated than it needs to be. It is, of course, hard work and don’t take the decision to self-publish lightly. If it is something you want to do, you should be willing to put the work in. Hopefully, I didn’t forget anything, but if I did, please let me know.

MyCam Update Week 1

MyCam Update Week 1

I share a lot in this update video, so I figure it’s only right to summarize.

  1.  I’ve got a new office.
  2.  Formatting of the ebook was harder than expected, but I got it done, thankfully.
  3.  Free ISBN freak-out. I was on lulu.com completing the process for uploading the book and got to the step where I was given my free ISBN. It really hit me then that this is actually happening and my dream is coming to fruition.
  4.  “Choose the Cover” where everyone will get the chance to vote on the cover that I will use for my book is still open. The poll can be found here: https://mayasp8.wordpress.com/2014/09/22/choose-the-cover/
    Voting closes October 9, 2014.
  5.  Be following on instagram @luv2rite1922 to be the first person to see the cover. Cover Reveal October 10, 2014.
  6. The prices for the book are as follows: Paperback- $9.99; Ebook: $2.99. All sales are final and there will not be any refunds unless there is an extenuating circumstance which will need to be discussed with me before a refund is awarded.
  7.  There are 42 days left until November 14th and Last Look Back’s official release.
  8.  Should there be a pre-order? Let me know if you would like to order the book early. The book is ready, I just don’t know if I am, eek! I’ll have to work on it and you’ll know by the end of the weekend what I decide.
There will be incentives for pre-order. Watch until the end of the video to find out. Psst, the incentives are at 10:48, if you just want to fast forward. I completely understand.
Woo! That was a lot. As always, thank you all for watching. And thank you for your support, I love you guys.
